I don't really understand people getting more conservative as they get older. I've never had any of my life events push me in that direction. How do you spend your life caring about the well-being of other people and suddenly wake up and be like "F**k them"?

You don’t. If you “get more conservative” you always were a conservative.
My parents are in the 80’s and are as liberal as they always have been. Partner and I are as liberal as we were in our 20’s (I’m actually more socialist than I was—and I was pretty socialist then).
If you look at the breakdown, boomers and older vote ALMOST IDENTICALLY to Gen X (Pew).
We didn’t get Trump because of the “Olds”, who are 48% of the electorate, we for him because of the “Young’s.”
