I suspect he sees himself as the old decrepit man he is. Age angers him. It makes him bitter. This is why he wants to visit holy hell on those who oppose him or say a cross word about him.
It angers him that there are smart people in the world. He knows he is not smart, despite the comments. So he has to put others down (see quotes where he denigrates the intelligence of others and boasts about others saying how truly smart he is).
He KNOWS he is not the smartest in the room.
