California has more residents than the 19 least-populated states, not including DC. CA has 2 US senators, the 19 lowest-populated states have 38.

Until the 17th Amendment passed in 1913, voters couldn't even choose their own senators.

So I'm just wondering, like, what sort of "democracy" did the framers actually want? 🤔

@esaeger The framers were rightly afraid of the uneducated.

@EnochianEntropy - They were definitely afraid of common working people in general, whom they referred to as "the people out of doors" and "the many headed hydra." It inspired them to build a system that went a bit overboard in putting in protections for the elites' minority interests. Sinema and Manchin denied the will of the overwhelming majority by voting against a sane minimum wage increase and fighting climate change.

@esaeger the senate is supposed to act as check & balance on the house of representatives. the actual problem is that the senate capped the number of representatives at 435 in 1929, & only reapportions after a census (which is part of WHY getting an accurate census is vitally important)
