This actually doesn't make a whole lot of sense... putting the ten commandments in every public school classroom...
Public schools are not the same as Catholic schools
I said what I said..

@duglop That's a violation of church and state Not everyone at public schools is "Christian".

@Iveyjanette1 We all know that but have you been paying attention what's going on because that's where we're at right now...

@duglop I have. And it's not right at all. Those of us who aren't evangelical are the ones being persecuted by these racist, fascist assholes. They want to impose 1950's values. Madelyn Murray O'Hair is turning in her grave. Her lawsuit made sure public schools are secular and (supposedly) tolerant for all.

@Iveyjanette1 You went really deep with it which is at the heart of the matter yes, but I was at the very tip of it the surface just from the standpoint of the difference between a Catholic school and a public school

@duglop Sorry if I confused you. I went to public school. My brother went to what would now be considered a "Christian heritage academy" so he could be "disciplined better" aka get away from gangbangers like my cousins at public school. They ENFORCED that Bible shit on him and fellow students. Including the Ten Commandments on the board. And lots of prayer time instead of learning reading etc. Indoctrinating kids early. Plus spanking students.

@Iveyjanette1 our public school spanked students in the 80's - parents were furious but it still happened a lot... there was an after school religion class for students (I forget the school name for it actually) but there was criteria to meet first - my neighbor went to it every Wednesday - the point is back then schools recognized the need for separation of church/state but also worked around those regulations in a non intruding kind of way

@Iveyjanette1 there was a small Catholic school in the small city close by my hometown... some of my public school friends left the public to attend that Catholic school and vice versa - the stories they all shared about that school showed all the differences between both schools in a nutshell... but the after school class at the public school was totally different, wish I could remember the actual name - you might recognize it...

@Iveyjanette1 ok sorry - 1 more - mom & dad weren't overly religious at all, but often threatened to send me to the Catholic school (even tho we're not Catholic) as a punishment until they learned more about that particular type of school - plus they couldn't afford to pay for it.... they were content with us being in a public school and attending Sunday school in the Methodist church... they'd be against pushing anything Religious in a public school - and they were Republicans (RIP mom & dad)

@duglop I had discipline issues in elementary and junior high, and eventually got expelled in 7th grade for behavior and fights. My mom wanted to send me to Bishop Conaty HS for high school, but couldn't afford tuition. She said I would get better education, though I would be fighting a lot. My asshole stepfather vetoed it,and I went to public high school. He was "Holiness" or Missionary Baptist church, which meant being in church all day and night on Sunday.

@Iveyjanette1 as did I - I always goofed off, I got 1 of the last spankings in my school for something I got blamed for that I didn't do (never got an apology for it either) thus why mom & dad used that empty threat at me, but our after school religion classes were strictly for Catholic based students, conducted by people from the church (sometimes held in the church basement, sometimes in the elementary school)...

@Iveyjanette1 I can remember several times I went to his Catholic church (as a naive kid) just for the experience cuz it was different than the Methodist stuff.. didn't like it overall - too many differences with my Methodist upbringing - in the military I attended a non-denominational based church - but I had a very bad experience there after my buddy was murdered... long difficult story... and my hometown priest was too busy banging the secretary in the church to marry my ex wife and myself..

@duglop The last church we went to was a storefront nudged between a bar,a motel and the liquor store. The deacons always sneaked over to the liquor store with the offering money to buy some Wild Turkey and to place a bet on the Rams every Sunday during football season(the liquor store owner was also a bookie). All the kids would sneak out during the sermon to buy candy and ice cream to keep from being bored😂😂 And you could SMELL the booze on the pastor when he felt the "spirit".

@duglop I should have never been in any organized school. Period. I was reading before 18 months old, which kids in Black and Brown neighborhoods didn't do, especially in poor areas like where we lived in Boyle Heights and then across town in South Central. Then being a neighborhood "celebrity" and forced into stuff like acting etc instead of being a normal kid? That caused a lot of jealousy and bullying. At some point,I started acting out and getting into trouble. (1/)

@duglop Just like now in 2024,there weren't any "gifted classes" for kids of color in the poor part of town,so I was stuck with the neighborhood school, and my mom and grandma didn't listen to the principal's suggestions that I get skipped to 3rd grade instead of kindergarten in 1966. They didn't think I was "ready". A mistake, maybe. I was already hanging around adults and older kids by age 3. I don't think religion would have helped at all with my behavior issues. (2/)

@duglop Our religious class on Tuesdays was more like Sunday school. Happy and less than an hour. I didn't like going to church at the Holiness or Missionary Baptist Church my stepfather went to. You had to stay there all damn day and all night, even on Sunday night and Wednesday night during Bible study and Thursday night choir rehearsal, and Friday night prayer meeting. We would be there past midnight. Ugh. 3+ hour sermons. Boring.
