I have a relative who works at modern Bell things have changed since then.
I did work at a company and had to temp on switchboard when the operator quit and walked out I was shown the unit and said hope you can learn it fast.
I managed the communication department at major Denver hospital. We had 19 operators to process thousands of calls, process daily fire response, helicopter landings, Core Zero response for patients near death etc.
Very stressful job 24/7 but we had some super stars.
Isn’t it amazing how much things can change in just a generation? I’m close to 70 years old. Dad was in advertising/marketing. Mum, of course, was a registered nurse.
We encouraged our daughter to pursue what she desired. She’s a professional engineer. At age 32 she’s senior/managing engineer in her department at a large city. If she *wanted* to work for Bell or as a nurse that would’ve been fine, too. But it mattered that she successfully did what she wanted.

My father always urged me to work for Ma Bell. He considered it a “ good job” for women.
