@ps9714 I hadn't heard of it before his case about 15 years ago. He'd worked a job in El Centro in the Imperial Valley a few months previous. I gather that by the time he had toughed out some symptoms for several weeks and they took awhile to get the diagnosis, it had done a lot of permanent damage. Just a terrible shame. I'm glad you posted about it, it's good to raise awareness about these things. 👍

I contracted a mild case in 1986, and 10 years later it still showed up on x-rays. Persistent, and difficult to treat.

@danalan I'm glad that it was mild for you. How did it present and how quickly did you get medical attention for it, if you don't mind sharing?

I spent a weekend visiting friends in Lemoore, and I stepped into some deep mud on a creek bank. The next week I got pneumonia. Treatment was mainly supportive - I was an otherwise fit 28-year-old.

For 3 weeks I was laid out - simply being awake for 15 minutes exhausted me.

@danalan My guy was about the same age and also in great shape. Good thing that you got attention and they were able to treat it promptly! I know of it in the Imperial Valley but didn't know it was up that far North. It just seems so random. @ps9714
