Where’s the U.S. Strategy for Counternarcotics in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is already a narco superpower. Afghanistan has accounted for about 84 percent of global opium production over the past five years. Despite a cultivation decline in 2018 due to low prices and drought, the country’s opium production has increased rapidly and consistently since 2001 and has remained stable at high levels in 2019 and into 2020.

(Here is a glimmer of good news, Vermont is doing some great things.)

Social distancing is a luxury many can’t afford. Vermont actually did something about it.
Covid-19 policies haven’t helped the people most affected by the virus, except in Vermont.

"The Difficult We Do Immediately. The Impossible Takes a Little Longer."

I would bet a lot of money that everyone here is doing the best that they can to keep themselves, their family, and others safe from infection.

Please do not give up !
Please redouble your efforts !
The next few months are going to be much rougher than any time this year.

No you won't be able to change the deniers minds. But you can protect yourself from them.

They are now the biggest threat.

Please stay home. Wear PPE. Do all the things.

This is just barely doable.

The Unity of Perception: Content, Consciousness, Evidence
by Susanna Schellenberg

"How does perception justify beliefs and yield knowledge of our environment? How does perception bring about conscious mental states? How does a perceptual system accomplish the feat of converting varying informational input into mental representations of invariant features in our environment?

Entropy production gets a system update.

if you consider something as many interacting subsystems, you arrive at a "stronger version of the second law," which has a nonzero lower bound for entropy production that results from the way the subsystems are connected. In other words, systems made up of interacting subsystems have a higher floor for entropy production than a single, uniform system.

Keep science irrational.
Is hard data the only path to scientific truth? That’s an absurd, illogical and profoundly useful fiction.

"Science seems to say: attending to beauty is exceptionally helpful and we should pay no attention to beauty."

Experience Blade Runner Like You Never Have Before Through a Feature-Length Remastered Soundtrack.

This sonic experience includes, of course, the well-known electronic pieces by composer Vangelis.

But it also incorporates background music, sound effects, and even snatches of dialogue from the movie. The result feels a great deal like watching Blade Runner without actually watching Blade Runner.

The New Politics of the Poor in Joe Biden’s (and Mitch McConnell’s) USA

Today, in the early winter of a pandemic and the economic crisis that accompanies it, there are 140 million poor or low-income Americans, disproportionately people of color, but reaching into every community in this country. More than a third of the potential electorate.

In the distorted mirror of public policy, those 140 million people have remained essentially invisible.

"Are we not warriors?”

"That quote didn’t come from a human being. It came straight out of ceremony. That message was given to us by the ancestors. It said: How long are you going to let other people decide the future for your children? Are you not warriors? It’s time, don’t come from a place of fear, come from a place of power."

A Wave of Change: Xiuhtezcatl and Nick Tilsen

"One of the things you talked about is confronting and healing trauma as a part of our work to heal our communities. That has solidified itself as a pillar of how I see the way that we must go forward in the world. I would love to hear some of your thoughts around what that work can look like. I think it’s a very unique conversation for Indigenous peoples."

Automating Society Report 2020

A great report (free download) on automated decision-making (ADM) systems in society. Lots of important research presented “through journalistic stories, then, through research-based sections cataloging different examples, and, finally, with graphic novels.”

While ADM systems already affect all sorts of activities and judgments, they are still mainly deployed without any meaningful debate.

(I really do not know if this means anything at all, but I still don't trust the The Palestinian Authority)

The Palestinian Authority under President Mahmoud Abbas cut all ties with Israel in May.

TEL AVIV—The Palestinian Authority said it would resume cooperation with Israel after cutting off contact in May, a move that reflects Palestinian aspirations to restart peace talks with the help of the incoming Biden administration.

If you are into software synths...
This is a screaming deal.

Loom II is amazingly deep, while getting up and running is simple. They have given us a whole lot of presets, while allowing us to learn all the possibilities. This is not the easiest synth to make a patch form scratch, yet the presets make being creative a breeze. If you like moving pads, or morphing rhythms, this is for you.

But three for $10.00 !!!
