Sabine Hossenfelder today posted a new video on youtube which everyone in theoretical physics should watch and think seriously about. She tells honestly in detail the story of her career and experiences in academia, explaining very clearly exactly what the problems are with the conventional system for funding research and for training postdocs.

@corlin: Her book is a very worthy read.

"Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray"

@corlin it was an eye opening video, especially from an American point of view. Definitely worth watching.

@corlin I worked at a university for decades and this is true. Also, one must publish those papers in order to obtain tenure; not getting tenure often means job termination. Indirect cost recovery is a funding model and important though. Funds helped pay for networking, information technology, and Internet connectivity. It’s a complicated environment. Incoming revenue is only tuition, extramural funding from grants and research, and donations.

@corlin and I should add there’s some opportunity for state funding for public institutions
