In America, rail has been totally fucked since the very beginning.... Except for three glorious years at the beginning of WW1, when because rail could not deliver fright on time, to the docks. The US Government took all rail out of private hands an nationalized it. Within 2 months, trains ran on time, had full employment, and delivered fright to waiting ships.

Passenger rail has always been a money loser for rail, the only reason they did it was US postal service, it was quite common to see a passenger train with 3 mail cars, and 1 passenger car. When the USPO took mail out of trains and put it on trucks... American passenger rail died. And Amtrak was born.
