This is a fascinating post by historian Bret Devereaux, that looks at ancient self-governing democracies.
The Athenians were able to escape this cycle through choice: by choosing, in their votes, in their legal and political speeches, in court decisions, in public pronouncements to reaffirm, again and again, their commitment to the democracy and the redefinition of the polity as one that supported democracy and self-government.

I think I have found a new read.
It even had me cracking out my copy of Thucydides and what would you know, but the passages he refers to were all circled.
I wonder where a lot of my political & social philosophical bent comes from. 😉
Also can't imagine why my kids' home education has been arranged around the backbone of learning history from the start. 😉
