Gah. I'm still in a bad mood this morning because last night two different shows were ruined for me by common cliches of modern writing.

I hate investing time in fiction only to have it spoiled by cheesy, over-used writing techniques. Curse you, George Martin, for encouraging writers to think that multiple points of view are cool. Curse you, 'Save the Cat!' for convincing writers that all stories follow the same "beat-sheet."

It's already day 4 of prog week, and I still have not brought out the Haken. It's time. And it's hard to pick any one song by them, but after last night I need something encouraging. So...

Here is Earthrise by Haken.

🎶 I was raised on rock and roll, but I was 60 years old before I ever learned of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Godmother of Rock and Roll, who changed the course of popular music, INSPIRED Chuck Berry AND Elvis with HER electric guitar style. 🎶
She WAS A FORCE!!

A Hacker's Mind
How the Powerful Bend Society's Rules, and How to Bend them Back.
By Bruce Schneier

Schneier broadens his frame to consider all of society's rules – its norms, laws and regulations – as a security system, and then considers all the efforts to change those rules through a security lens, framing everything from street protests to tax-cheating as "hacks."

The policies that companies have for payout when it comes to creators are ridiculous. The 30, 60, and 90-day payout policy shouldn't apply when you get your deliverables immediately.

: I am curious, does anyone reading this have trypophobia? I do, and it's very odd to me because my brain generally loves patterns and repeating elements in both design and music. But for some reason I feel immediate revulsion, disgust and even a vague sort of nausea when it occurs.

An interesting (?) aspect for me is that when it occurs, I first feel a strange [not sure of the word here but I think it's ] tightness in the back of my jaw.

Anybody else? No? Just me? 🙂

In the long aftermath of the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica Scandal, microtargeting remains the most mentioned term in the conversation about political ads, and it is perceived as the greatest threat that must be dealt with.

A thousand Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandals every day

This week my picks will focus on prog rock, including some of my favorites from several sub-genres, including math rock, prog metal, djent and maybe even Zeuhl. To kick off the week, check out What I Really Need, from RPWL. (There is an official video, as well, but I feel that its cheesiness detracts from the music and lyrics.)

Mom says I can spend $4.00 on the book order. I really want The Dune Storybook that costs $3.95! But...if I buy 3 books I get a free Heathcliff poster. So I guess I'll buy 3 $1.25 books I'll never read instead. This was the major life decision made every month of every third grader in the 80's!

My dearest friends in tech. If your system allows logging, please make sure your logging is meaningful, and rotates. I just had to delete a 60Gb log file because it had filled up the boot drive for this stores pos server.

Someone needs to hack into the Jewish Space Laser so that we can take out these pesky spy balloons with pinpoint accuracy.
