Residents of Jasper, TX, I think, are justifiably concerned that what happened to James Byrd will be forgotten, both locally and nationally. I try to think of this in terms of Emmitt Till. The Till murder became a catalyst for the Civil Rights movement; how has the equally horrific Byrd case not driven similar passion?

TBH I think it has to do with news saturation. With Emmett Till, it seemed horrendous but many were unaware of the racism and brutality taking place in their own town, or the nearby city. Now we have access to almost every incident throughout the country, if not around the world. Till's beating seemed an outlier to many and not commonplace. By 1998, we were already feeling the anesthetic effects of the news glut. It has only gotten noisier and more numbing.
