TBH I think it has to do with news saturation. With Emmett Till, it seemed horrendous but many were unaware of the racism and brutality taking place in their own town, or the nearby city. Now we have access to almost every incident throughout the country, if not around the world. Till's beating seemed an outlier to many and not commonplace. By 1998, we were already feeling the anesthetic effects of the news glut. It has only gotten noisier and more numbing.
