Before you ask why storm victims didn’t evacuate despite warnings of an approaching hurricane, please consider that many folks don’t have cars, have no family or friends to stay with, can’t afford gasoline or hotels, don’t dare risk losing their jobs if they can’t return in time, can’t safely evacuate their elderly loved ones, won’t leave without their pets, or have legitimate health concerns about staying in shelters. Poor shaming them during and after a catastrophe is not a good look. #Milton
@cassandra17lina The problem is the folks who can leave who don't cuz stubborn. Those who say, "I didn't know it would be that bad" and other nonsense take up resources that are needed for those that can't leave.
A roommate's mother once drove to the ocean and 'rode it out' in a house, on a beach, that got demolished by the storm cuz she thought it would be fun. She put the 5 rescuer's lives at risk for that 'fun'. At 65 I expect folks to know better.
@TrueBloodNet I had a very sobering conversation with a guy in Texas who had responded after Hurricane Ike in 2008. He described the body recovery process in the alligator/snake/chemical laden flood waters. Many bodies were stored in temporary morgues, never identified or claimed. He also mentioned that quite a few people took advantage of the storm to “disappear” and leave their spouses/creditors/enemies behind thinking they’d drowned.
@TrueBloodNet They might have. If searchers needed to enter dangerous spaces to search for these folks in response to missing persons reports.
