question of the day - beer rating. If reviewing a beer via an online rating site, how much influence does the brewery reputation have over your score? Also, how much of that rating is based on a personal style bias (e.g. dislike dark beers but love hoppy ones).

@beer for my wife and I, none of it is based on the brewery and I would say most is influenced by personal tastes... if you don't like a particular style you're going to rate it lower unless it really stands out somehow.

@Vanzandtjr What you shared is not an uncommon approach.
We rate beers based on meeting the metric for style, regardless of personal style bias. In case the question is asked.
In speaking with breweries, unfortunately, rating based on if the imbiber likes the style is a frustrating qualifier for reviews. Mostly because it cannot account for if that beer met, failed, or excelled in the style requirements.

@beer sadly most of us aren't professional beer tasters, we can only go by what we know. I've never imagined "user" ratings being helpful to a brewery. I'd think how quickly it sells out would be more telling. 😆

@Vanzandtjr Oh, we are well aware of that. And like the rest of ya'll FOMO is real.

@beer For me, the brewery's reputation does have some influence on my rating, especially if I am disappointed with a beer. And style bias for sure.

@ChrisAgne Thanks for the response!
We hear that a lot, regarding both brewery bias and style bias (e.g. whether it's one they enjoy).

@beer
I can't think of a style I don't appreciate if it's done well.
I don't think the brewery factors in, perhaps subconsciously?

@BrentSullivan We thought this question would make people think.
As we've judged beers, in a blind setting, the results often surprise us.
In rare cases, where we have experience consuming many beers from that brewery, we might discover it blind. But this is mostly because the yeast used is familiar.

@beer Reputation matters. If I try something and don't like it I'm more likely to give it a second try if I have tried and liked beers from a brewery before. And that's my personal rating scale: "LIKE" or "DON'T LIKE."

@NotTheFakeNate A fair opinion. There are breweries that, despite their age or relevance, we still support. But only because their beers still hold up and are of a high quality. All the best!
