I spent a lot of time in the Atlantic ocean as a child/teenager, and I got caught in a current or two, but I never did get caught in a riptide. I did get stung by a jellyfish. Ouch.

Same, and was pulled out several times. It's startling to watch the beach quickly recede. Swimming parallel works, and bonus is the current tends to dampen waves so it's a little easier to breathe.
Not to alarm anyone, but aerial photos sometimes show sharks lurking around the deep side of the channel that causes those currents, aka 'the buffet'. But way out. Just don't take forever swimming out of the current!
