my milk solidified overnight. how's your day going?

@redenigma
DUDE!

That happened to me once. My son left a glass of milk out and it solidified.

I have no idea the science behind this. I suppose it's maybe yogurt? I did not test that theory. 🤢

@janallmac it seemed fine yesterday, & i'm pretty sensitive to when it starts to sour. this really seems more like turning to yogurt than sour... which means the fridge may be failing

@redenigma
Oh! You left it in the fridge?

My son left the milk sitting out on a warm summer's night.

Yeah... I'd be a bit worried about your fridge. Sorry. That's not good news.

@janallmac it's around 21 years old, so it likely should be replaced soon with a more energy efficient one. the stove & dishwasher also need replacing. i have to order non-SS because the appliance store stocks what sells most & i HATE cleaning stainless steel.

@redenigma
Oh dear. That's a hit to the budget.

I've seen some nice white appliances recently. White appliances may be coming back in vogue soon... stainless steel may be waning in popularity.

I've got stainless steel, and I agree, it's a pain to clean.

@janallmac my stove is stainless steel. it's disgusting. it may be ok in homes with no kids or pets or actual cooks...

@redenigma I absolutely adore my gas range. It's stainless steel on the front, but black on the top. I use it heavily, and clean it a lot.

Normally, that is. Not so much just lately.

Stoves/ranges should be black on top, IMO.

@janallmac this one is black on top but the burner pans aren't removable to clean... when i was 18 months old it needed service & the guy told me replacing just the pans & gaskets would cost $500.
i learned exactly what never to buy again with that

@redenigma
No way!

That's awful. Not a good design.

Mine, you can take the burners, the grill part, and even the knobs apart and clean them. The grill's good and heavy.

It does get used a lot, so grease and stuff gets all up in there. It's important to clean those parts out.

@janallmac if you don't (or can't) clean those parts, the gas delivery tubes rust out. that is what's happening now. one burner is completely rusted out already )we haven't used the right front burner because of rust for over 10 years)

@janallmac but, due to new code, i can't get another gas range because there's no vent in my kitchen. i'm ok with electric though.

@redenigma
Yeah.. Electric can be good. I understand gas is being phased out in some places. I'm used to gas, but could adapt to electric, if it worked well and was nicely engineered/designed.

I've heard... induction (?) ranges are good but have never used one.

@janallmac since most of my cookware is cast iron, we're probably going with induction

@redenigma @janallmac
Will vouch for induction. We switched from gas to induction and it's been great. And it sounds like you're all set for cookware.

@TomeReader @redenigma @janallmac
As a reformed gas stove fan, I'll vouch for induction with the caveat: cheaper induction units challenge me on lower temperatures, like for scrambling eggs, because they seem to create 'Low' by toggling power.
Better ($$$) units I've used steadily provided low heat and are fantastic.

They all work great on higher temps. Boil water? Done boss, what next.

@b4cks4w @TomeReader @redenigma
This is good to know. Thank you!

Do they have the instant off feature? Like gas stoves? Or do they retain heat for a long time, like electric?

@janallmac @TomeReader @redenigma
Depends on the surface above the coils. I have one unit with a thin top and so, little thermal mass, is warm to touch a minute after boiling water.
