Wow, a lot to unpack with this self-defeating move by Google.
1. Google _saves_ real estate money w/remote workers
2. ...but disproportionately charges (pay cut) those who can't afford to live close
3. ...by conflating MSA with 'same city' which is non-applicable anyway for housing costs
TL/DR; Google can kiss goodbye it's diversity and retention efforts. Didn't have much of a reputation to damage, but that too.

Unfortunately, cutting pay for those who move to less expensive cities/markets is fairly common among large companies. 😒
Usually, there's a certain minimum distance you have to move to be affected by the pay cut, though. Like, you have to move to a whole new metro area, usually, not just out to the suburbs or something
Could hurt employee retention, though, and tech workers aren't exactly in great supply these days.
