Your apparent intelligence—your ability to understand a point and follow an argument or evidence to its logical conclusion—should not vary in proportion to whether or not the conclusion of the argument is welcome to you.

Unfortunately, a lot of people who pass for clever fellows suddenly turn as dumb as oxen when they realize that information is leading them to conclusions they don't want to reach. Suddenly ordinary, simple sentences become unintelligible quagmires..
