Having cancer is terrifying to some. I learned the hard way. It’s almost like they think it’s contagious. You do find out who really cares for you.

@LnzyHou I think this is right on target. Folks can be uncomfortable confronting the reality and may end up trying to ignore/procrastinate rather than deal with it. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're horrible people, maybe just not the friends that we'd prefer or that we'd be in their place. Does that make sense?

Hospitalized after a near-fatal car accident, my then boyfriend never came to see me at the hospital. Nor was he present for four months of physical therapy.
He said it was too difficult for him to see me in pain.
Contrast this behavior with my male hair stylist who snuck into the hospital to wash and cut my hair. The nurses told me. I have no memory of him being there.
Character is revealed in adversity. Not caused by it.
