so, if I'm understanding correctly, if the AMOC tipping point could be reached as early as in 13 years, which would be 2037, then even if we all decarbonize by 2040 or 2050 it would be too late. we need to speed progress up on that.
@peeppeepcircus I have not seen any studies as to what would happen if indeed Man does halt and ultimately reduce CO2 from oil combustion...i.e., would world temperatures remain stable. It seems that an object in motion would stay in motion and hard to or difficult to slow down. Nature loves equilibrium, but in her timescale, and these temperatures we currently live in will continue for a long time. Same for any other tipping points we've seem to have pushed.

@peeppeepcircus @Victor I have seen quite a few that say even if we stop right now it is too late the momentum is in progress. I don't understand anyone having children right now and I almost want to scream at them "WTF are you thinking?"
somewhere in this thread i posted a recent video interview with climate scientist Michael Mann - he was saying that if we stop all fossil fuels now, this is about the level including the more frequent extreme weather events that we get, and we can probably adapt to this level in time, but it we continue fossil fuels the climate will change past this.
@Tattoomonkey29 @peeppeepcircus We have 6 kids that are just barely on their own. When COVID raged through I told my wife that we were lucky that our kids were not young when something like this happened. We now reflect on climate change and what young people will have to deal with much less with kids...let alone the politics...sigh
i'm feeling the urgency of this time window we have to make meaningful progress in stopping ff.
but apparently scientists are also now actually starting to talk more seriously about how putting other stuff into the atmosphere to filter the sun would work. 
@peeppeepcircus @Victor Yikes, I remember it seeming like more of them were against that idea given how there is no way to know what would happen and no way to reverse any chain reactions! I guess they have to as nobody has listened to anything they suggest and they already are getting the blame for creating hurricanes to hit red states!
@Victor @peeppeepcircus Mine is 28 and has the implant.I do think the one thing I said over and over that she may have firm understanding of is "don't have kids". I remember one day some years back as I was replaying a perfect summer day that I had at about 8 years old from getting off the school bus, feeling the warm breeze smelling the sycamore & adventuring to Rattlesnake creek on my pony. It broke my heart to realize that totally perfect early summer kind of day is gone forever.

I'm in twitter spaces where I am speaking to diverse groups of people to deeply understand their suffering to find solutions. Especially indigenous people. This is a practice in mindfulness taught to me by Thich Naht Hanh. 🪷🧘♀️

from what i've been reading is that the AMOC shutdown will affect Europe the worst with more cooling and but also more weather extremes, making today's agriculture there not possible. East coast USA sea level will rise. Colder in USA northeast.
North Hemisphere cooling a bit (although I don't know how much).
I don't really understand how it would affect USA West Coast states.
@peeppeepcircus La Niña and El Niño would be amplified (drought and rain). Monsoon months in the Arizona and southeastern CA areas would be major events. Have not seen any predictions on hurricanes coming but this is dependant on ocean temperatures and eastern shores of Pacific.
@Victor there was a climate scientist recently speaking in an interview, Michael Mann, that said that if we halt all fossil fuels today, this level of extreme weather and disasters is what we would need to build resilience to, that it's still possible to build resilience for this level of disruptions. but that without halting fossil fuels real quick, that changes into unsurvivable. paraphrasing, but that was the gist.
