"Atmospheric rivers can transport volumes of water many times that of the Mississippi River, doing so all in the air above your head," says Dr. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with UCLA, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and the Nature Conservancy of California.

SWAIN: There is a lot of evidence that climate change is dramatically altering atmospheric rivers, especially the intensity and the amount of moisture that atmospheric rivers can hold.... So there is a climate change component to the atmospheric river story

the next 7 days carry extremely high precip forecasts where impacts will be compounding as fast moving intense storms don’t allow much time for recovery, likely increasing regional flooding risk and severity. Stay tuned. 1/6/2023

Many CA snow sites are at >150% of normal, or at record high levels and more major storms are coming. The nightmare scenario is the continued buildup of massive mountain snowpack followed by large, wet, /warm/ storms that rapidly melts the snow and floods the Central Valley.

A good explainer on the different terms & how affects the severity & frequency of storms.

US Government Predicted a Devastating California ‘ARkStorm’ in 2010—Is It Happening Now?

“While earthquake risk always exists, the risk of mega flood increases with each passing year,” Swain said.

just heard that the UC Davis Arboretum lost 24 trees!

this hasn't just been claiming large non-native trees (like eucalyptus trees, which are super flammable and have no business being in anyway), but it's been taking out big established oaks! they can't go from soil to soggy soil so quickly 😢

means the frequency & severity of storms keeps going up. A yo-yo of drought then floods will change our land a bit. wildfires already started it.

A quick refresher on what "Turn Around, Don't Drown" means. If you try to walk or drive through flood waters, you could get stuck or swept away. The image below shows how dangerous water can be. If you see flooded water, do NOT try and cross it. Thus, "turn around, don't drown."
