The Moorish Chief.
When I was a teenager and went with a class to The Philadelphia Museum of Art I wandered around thinking everything was actually pretty great and then turned into a room to see this.
I got out the poster I bought like 35 years ago and showed it to my kid tonight and he was like THAT LIGHT.
It's hard to describe.

@Shelter When I was little, we used to go to that museum once or twice a month. This painting was one of my favorites, precisely for that reason. What a stunning painting it is! It looks as though he could just step right out of the frame and talk to you.

@TheRealDelia
Yes. That foot is about to step out.
This out of every single incredible piece of art I've ever seen was the One. It yanked me by the chest and slapped me.
It's incredible.

@TheRealDelia
I told my kid tonight that the subject was a random dude hired by the artist and he was like oh my God.
Yes.
This random subject is that powerful.

Follow

@Shelter Absolutely. I have vivid memories of walking into the room where the painting was displayed. I couldn’t have been more than five or six, but the image has stayed with me.

@TheRealDelia
It's wild.
When you walk into that room you see him first and suddenly you understand light and texture.
This is why it's my favorite painting.
