TIL an awesome new word:

OLIGOPOLY

(And I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing it a lot…)

@TheAbbotTrithemius: We heard it a lot in the '70s, and then after the Reagan Administration, talk nearly ceased on it. Then it got buried even more under Clinton and then Bush and then Obama. The Activist Boomers who got into government really stopped talking about the evils of oligarchies, corporate or otherwise, once they got into power. Lip service, yeah., but they were/are neoliberals, not actual liberals.

Hmm… that actual word? I mean oligarchy and monopoly of course.

I just like how it shows how those two things feed each other. It’s like a two headed monster word!

It’s time has come, like never ever before. :)

@TheAbbotTrithemius: Oligopoly is a word, yes. At least it was when I was in 8th-grade Social Studies.

I’m not questioning whether it’s a word or not, my point it seems like a word whose for sustained usage has become crucial.

This google trends graph, unfortunately only goes back to 2004, but it clearly shows a steady increase in usage with most sustained usage between 2022 and 2023, and I have zero doubt that record will be broken moving forward as the need to unravel the ever more egregious techno-oligarchic noose becomes more acute.
