4. GOAT – "Zombie". It's like a socially awkward guy at a party—loud as a plaid leisure suit and trying a bit too hard to be arty. But yet somehow it's also undeniably funky and makes the loud awkward parts work in that context.

3. Henrik Appel – "Nothing to Lose". Stockholm's Henrik Appel's voice is pitched somewhere between a younger Mick Jagger and Nikki Sudden, and he shines on this ramshackle "Angie"-like ballad featuring piano, guitar, flute and a bit of shaker.

2. 2nd Grade – "I Wanna Be On Your Mind". Philly indie rock band is back with their third album and this single, with jangle-pop guitar licks and girl-next-door vocals that leap out of the speakers.

1. Maggie Rogers – "in The Living Room". Following up her amazing "Don't Forget Me", Maggie Rogers is back with another song in a classic '80s-'90s Americana vein, from the song structure to the foregrounded guitars and drums and her impassioned vocal.

5. Memorials – "Cut It Like A Diamond". Comes on like a '60s British spy movie soundtrack, all slinky bass, groovy organ and fuzzed out guitars. Think of Portishead, but more rock.

4. Waxahatchee – "Much Ado About Nothing". Another simple yet irresistible indie country-folk song from Katie Crutchfield, but notice the way MJ Lenderman starts doubling some of the vocal notes on the electric guitar.

3. Florist – "This Was a Gift". New York group's indie folk meditation on love and loss is given emotional emphasis by its woozy backing track and weary vocal.

2. Kerchak x LeoStayTrill – "Jimi Hendrix". Grimy drill track featuring French rapper Kerchak and Zimbabwe-born, London-based rapper LeoStayTrill. A fast-paced thrill ride through cross-Channel hip hop.

5. Kit Sebastian – "Faust". Kit Sebastian's music, including "Faust", is a delicious stew cooked up in London mixing together Turkish psychedelia, Brazilian tropicalia, French ye-ye and more.

4. The Hard Quartet – "Our Hometown Boy". The Hard Quartet is an alt-rock supergroup featuring members of Pavement, Chavez, The Cairo Gang and The Dirty Three. And "Our Hometown Boy" is a psychedelic supersong featuring Byrds-like chiming guitars and three-part harmonies with a loose-'n'-grungy feel.

3. GloRilla – "Hollon". Cicada rhythm trap beat—check. Window-rattling bass—check. GloRilla spitting fierce bar after fierce bar—double and triple check. Slaps.

2. Ezra Collective featuring Olivia Dean – "No One's Watching Me". The British jazz quintet pays tribute to Afrofunk with a strong horn melody and neo-soul singer Olivia Dean driving home the winning run.

1. Rudimental with Mystic Marley and Flowdan – "Ram Pam". London's Rudimental are keeping drum and bass alive with this crucial dancehall banger featuring Bob Marley granddaughter Mystic on vocals and rapping from grime MC Flowdan.

5. Suzanne Vega – "Rats". If you had told me back in 1984 that in 30 years' time, Suzanne Vega would be writing post-apocalyptic punk songs about vermin, I'd have said, "Who's Suzanne Vega?" since I didn't start listening to her sophisticated folk/pop until about 1987.
