The song that made my day 2023.01.15:
Billy Nomates - "Balance Is Gone"
An upbeat little tune that hurtles along on a growling bassline, decorated by a rotating cast of pleasantly surprising synthpop flourishes that drop in for a bit, disappear, and sometimes return. Especially tasty are the synth/guitar solo and the spot when the drummer goes from hitting every beat equally to emphasizing the 2 and the 4.

The song that made my day 2023.01.14:
Belle and Sebastian - "A Bit of Previous"
I played their album "If You're Feeling Sinister" so many times that my partner, who initially liked it, soured on the band. But I still listen, and this one gave me a proper rush. It's got everything I love about them: jangly indie pop sound, literate, vulnerable lyrics, slightly twee but with a touch of darkness to balance it.

The New Pornographers - "Really Really Light"
Vancouver indie power pop group The New Pornographers had me at "Mass Romantic" in 2000. 23 years later they've still got me with this new track, a quieter, more nuanced pop snack wrapped around the rapture-inducing vocal harmonies of A.C. Newman, Kathryn Calder and Neko Case. What song(s) made your day today? #music #CoSoMusic

Stepz feat Fizzler - "Pacman"
Welds samples from the classic video game to a drill 'n' bass-heavy backing track that calls back to grime, a subgenre of U.K. rap from early in the millennium. I'll admit to not understanding much of the slang, but I think it's making a serious statement on racism in a humorous way. What song made your day today? #music #CoSoMusic

Iggy Pop - "Strung Out Johnny"
Iggy sings a poignant junkie's tale (is this about Johnny Thunders?) in his low voice, with a menacing bass riff to boost the drama. Another late-career winner for the Popper.

The song that made my day 2023.01.06:
Sessa - "Ponta de Faca"
Builds hypnotically using a simple repeating guitar figure and deadened bass strings, with gentle touches of flute that make the track somehow simultaneously lush and spare and lyrics practically whispered in Portuguese. #music #CoSoMusic

The Casual Dots - "The Frequency of Fear"
Washington D.C. indie rock supergroup who made their debut album in 2004, then waited 18 years to release a follow-up. This gem leads it off, sounding less like American indie than something you'd hear on a Kiwipop classic from The Clean or The Bats. #music #CoSoMusic
A slinky, trip-hopped-up retro-soul beat underpins Ponder's powerful, uplifting vocal. #music #CoSoMusic
