This is an American pika. They're found at high altitudes, and as their biomes heat up, are being found at even higher altitudes as they seek to escape the heat.
While some have adapted to hotter areas around volcanos, they can die if exposed to heat higher than 78F for longer than 6 hours. You'll often catch them darting between rocks and crevices during the day.
@misslovelymess a majestic mountain mouse!
@Smersh Indeed.
@Smersh these little cuties live in the #SierraNevada mountains.
But thanks to #climatechange, we can’t have nice things.
Here’s an article from 2017:
Pikas Are Disappearing from California's Sierra Nevada Mountains
@Smersh So if you kept one as a pet and bought it little treats to gnaw on, would they be pika chews?
I'll show myself out.
@Smersh Yes, they are susceptible to global warming. Of interest are the pikas in the Columbia River gorge, who have conditions, at a much lower altitude, where they can survive (but they still need cool temps & grasses, etc to harvest/store for winter.) ✌️
