Yeah, I think it’s going to be a thing in the Anglosphere for at least another couple of generations sadly.
It’s also sad that folks here point to you all and Aus: “look their minimum wage is $20/hr!” Completely disregarding not only differences in cost of living but the simple factor that *they’re completely different currencies*. But that’s the ‘Murican education system I suppose. 🤷♂️
$20/hr would be more livable IF the housing (both owning & renting) markets were not insane*.
From the Stats NZ site.
"Median weekly income from all sources, for all people, decreased $54 (7.6 percent) to $652 in the June 2020 quarter."
From a property website in Nov. 2020:
"national median weekly rent was $520" and there's a huge gap with Auckland & Wellington being even ⬆️
2 income household, flatmates or commute are the only way to survive.
~~~
* a whole other fucking mess.
@Smersh
This conversation was had here too. And it's ongoing.
The minimum wage went up to $20/hr on 1 April this year.
It still falls short of the Living Wage though.
This is an article from last July about the process of getting businesses to commit to being a Living Wage employer.
