But then my husband, an agnostic, asked me, a raised Catholic atheist, to raise our kids in a church so they wouldn't get bullied.

Tell your dearly beloved that I was raised in the Catholic church all the way to 18 years old and I was bullied from 3rd grade to 12th. Mostly from kids who went to the same church as my family did.
I'm curious as to where he got the belief that if a child goes to church, they won't be bullied?

I speak to every child as if they're a miniature adult and if they keep up, awesome, and if they don't I explain.
@Shelter I try to as well. I remember when my cousin, who is now 23, asked me when she was about 13 or 14 if the pain of losing someone got easier.
I said, "No. Not easier but it does get slightly less painful. The memories will, hopefully, be more happy than sad."
She's told me often that I'm the only family member who listens to her and speaks to her truthfully. Sadly, I think she's right. Most of the family covers up everything and defends the bullshit & bullshitters.
