Ugh the last 3 days have been exhausting. If you ever need to remove a 15 year old blackberry bush - and make certain it does not grow back - use dynamite π€£
massive root system - 4 large garden waste bags full of roots.
Always have them in the house.
Guess you donβt recommend planting blackberry bush. Was thinking about bringing one to my son & DIL.
@LnzyHou Only if you have a place you want to leave them forever and it'[s not planted anywhere near a sewer line. For health reasons I can't eat raspberries or blackberries anymore (seeds to small) and this bush was growing in one of my raised beds so it had to come out.
That settles it. Not happening.
@NorthernInvader They just grew wild where I grew up in New York, about 70 miles north of NYC. I still remember the first time I saw blackberries for sale in a supermarket and laughed that people would actually pay for them.
@MakerWerks I grew up in South Vancouver in the 50s and they were everywhere there, same on Lulu island on the Fraser river. Acres of vines
@NorthernInvader I did a network consulting gig in Vancouver, BC back in the early 2000s. I thought it was a beautiful, albeit expensive city.
@MakerWerks I left in 1997 and moved to the West Kootenays. I loved the Vancouver of the 50s and 60s but then the developers took over council and it was downhill from that point on.
@NorthernInvader Yeah, back in the 80s the Austin City Council was all about keeping Austin green. At some point after all the tech cash started to collect here, the council was still all about the green. It was just the kind of green that greased palms and lined pockets.
If you cut it off at the ground, is it capable of growing back?
@amarand yes
So does it store energy in its roots or is it a rhizome/bulb based thing?
@amarand roots I believe. Some of the roots coming off the main plant were close to 5cm (2") in diameter New plants would pop up off those roots.
@NorthernInvader blackberry brambles are the worst! I'm pretty sure they actually attack when you try to cut them back. dynamite is a tempting solution...
@NorthernInvader
But I like blackberries.
