Are there fans of old westerns here among us?
I drew my son-in-law’s name for Xmas. He’s a western fan and my home area is known for movies, especially westerns so I’m looking at titles of classics to get him.
If you have a fav in these or a suggestion and I could see if was filmed in the Owens Valley area or close.

It wasn’t filmed in the Owens Valley, but damn, if Shane isn’t a great Western, I don’t know what is.
The Professionals is also great.
@mikeharmanos LOVE Shane! I cry every time.
@mikeharmanos I’ll check The Professionals, it doesn’t sound familiar.
@NorCalCherylLyn oh my - what a cast.
Burt Lancaster is the lead.
Jack Palance is the bad guy.
Claudia Cardinale is the bombshell.
Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Ralph Bellamy, and Woody Strode are all in it.
@mikeharmanos @NorCalCherylLyn
I was going to say.
I'm not really a fan of "westerns" as such, but I've always thought well of anything I saw Jack Palance in.
Seems like you couldn't go wrong with a western with him in it.
@Tarnagh @NorCalCherylLyn Not bad for a coal cracker from Pennsylvania…
@Tarnagh @mikeharmanos he was always good! And apparently a pretty nice, normal, guy according to my Gma.
@NorCalCherylLyn @mikeharmanos
He was so good at "creepy."
I laughed so hard when I saw they got him to host Ripley's Believe it or Not. He was perfect there, too. 🙂
@Tarnagh @mikeharmanos he was so perfect for that show. Very dramatic!
@mikeharmanos ok now I have to see it! What a cast.
@NorCalCherylLyn
You can't beat Tremors! ❤️ 🤣
For westerns, Magnificent Seven with Yule Brenner is one of my all-time favorites. But the other suggestions here are great, too.
@p3R1n01D LOVE Tremors so much! 😁
@InUnfunky you’ve got some catching up to do 😁
Apparently.
It's a good thing that it's NOT baseball season, as said catching up becomes feasible. 🤓
Hold up -- Star Trek Generations I HAVE seen. 👍
But Tremors I will probably STILL take a pass on. 😮 🤔 😆
@InUnfunky Tremors is a campy, hysterical, movie populated with monsters and Desert Rats… the people I grew up with. 😄
From the Movie Museum in Lone Pine..
As a former vhs/dvd rental store clerk, I am well-aware of its status amongst movie fans.
🤓 I try to avoid all films with Kevin Bacon (save for “Animal House,” heh) but I’ll add it to “the list.” Maybe I’ll get to it before spring training. 😁
@InUnfunky I miss the video store days!
Bacon is ok but the rest of the cast are excellent! Reba is so damn funny.
Oh right! She’s in it, and Fred Ward too.
Okay, I’ll report back when I watch it. 👍🤓
I miss the video store days, too. ❤️
@InUnfunky hope you lol at it
@Bix @InUnfunky another I’ve never heard of. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah yeah yeah, I know. To the list it goes.
Be advised, Cheryl Lyn — pretty sure “Bone Tomahawk” is kinda like if “The Hills Have Eyes” was a western. I think. 😉
(See also “Ravenous” which I HAVE seen. Also with Guy Pearce is “The Proposition.” Brutal flicks.)
Of course, Kurt is in Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.”
“Outland” is “High Noon” in space. 😄
@InUnfunky @Bix Hateful Eight traumatized me as most of Tarantino’s films do. But it was well done… 🫣
Hmmm, western horror? I’ll try it.
That reminds me about Cowboys & Aliens. Liked that one.
Might be playing fast and loose with some of these, NTM "modern westerns." 🤔 🤷♂️ 🤓
Quite a few Peckinpah --
Ride The High Country
The Ballad Of Cable Hogue
The Wild Bunch
Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia
Others --
High Noon (def. classic)
3:10 To Yuma
More --
Coens' remake of True Grit
Tommy Lee Jones' Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (of course)
Opinion warning! heh
I thought that Clint's Unforgiven was very overrated.
@InUnfunky nice additions to the westerns list! 😎
This is not exactly the sort of thing you describe, but Prospect (2018) is a great sci-fi gold rush movie starring Pedro Pascal.
I watched it and barely noticed the sci-fi elements. I was so keyed into the Western elements. It's the best recent Western I've seen.
Definitely not set in the Owens Valley.
@preclude that sounds like a movie hubby and I will like! Ty
I’m tempted to get him a few nonwesterns to round out his movies from home. Your fav?
Tremors
Bad Day at Black Rock
High Sierra
Star Trek V or Generations
The Longest Trailer
The Other Side of the Mountain
