Can anyone help me identify this tree? It grew out of a ball type thing. Not a spiky ball like a sycamore but smooth. #GardenHelp
@NorCalCherylLyn I'd guess it's a chestnut oak. Might be good to plant it this fall, after the heat of summer, but before the hard cold sets in. Though as long as the soil isn't frozen it'll do fine. Oaks like to put their taproot down when young. And they do grow pretty fast during the first ten years before they slow down a bit. It helps them to recover quicker if/when the deer nibble on them, or rub antlers on them. Dang deer.
@CJLavoie I think putting it in the ground this Fall will be good. Hoping it’s not stunted from being potted since last Summer but I’ll probably like it even if it is.
@NorCalCherylLyn Looks like an oak, I’m thinking red oak but I’m not for sure about that.
