Major hurricane risk for Florida

A developing hurricane, which will be named Helene, could rapidly intensify in the Gulf of Mexico. The risk is increasing for a major hurricane, and direct impacts are likely in Florida. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

Helene will very likely undergo rapid intensification.

It could go from a tropical storm to a Category 3+ in barely 2 days.

Spreading of the air aloft (which sucks up warm, moist air from below) AND record high "hurricane fuel," or oceanic heat content, will make Helene mean.

There exists a very real chance that Florida gets hit by a major hurricane later this week.

You have 48 hours to prepare until impacts begin. Use them wisely.

Landfall is likely on Thursday. If you're in the yellow, be ready to take action. If in the orange, prepare NOW.

Hamster Note (from 6 hours ago)
Florida needs to start preparing NOW for a likely rapidly-intensifying hurricane.

Soon-to-be-Helene could bring a destructive impact to Florida where it hits if current indications are correct.

We’ll await a first stab from NHC today.

Ensemble models show landfall from Louisiana to near Tampa by Thursday/Friday.

Once a center of circulation has formed, and the NHC are able to get readings, we’ll have a better idea where it’s heading.

Convection has ticked up a bit just south of Cuba around Invest 97L.

It’s expected to become a Potential Tropical Cyclone today and eventually Hurricane Helene by midweek.

While path is still unclear, intensity guidance is concerning.

There is still time to prepare ahead of landfall and our friends at @[email protected] have you covered!

Matthew Capucci giving the facts about the possible something later this week myradar.com/videos/5426

@MyRadar

🍂 Leaves changing color in the fall is a certainty in life. But what causes it, and when will it happen this year? @[email protected] breaks down what you can expect to see this year.

In case anyone hasn’t seen it yet, Erica’s documentary on Mexico’s infamous earthquakes is extremely compelling and well-done:

I think it’s @MyRadar strongest video piece in a very long time. Erica’s narrative is extremely well-constructed, and Mauricio did a masterful job editing… it looks like a Discovery Channel-style documentary. HUGE props to the two of them.

Midwest supercells

A corridor of severe weather potential will exist from Ontario and the Upper Midwest through the corn Belt and into far northeast Oklahoma. A few supercells with a hail and tornado threat will be possible. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

If something forms in the northwestern Caribbean next week, it will pass over extremely warm waters.

That is something we need to closely monitor:

Possible Caribbean or Gulf system

A broad region of spin over Central America, known as the Central American Gyre, may help generate a named storm next week. It’s too early to ascertain any specific details, but tropical development is possible. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an early preview.

The full moon will look a little darker than normal tonight.

Why?

A very, very minor lunar eclipse. The moon will be darkened by the broadest, most diffuse part of the Earth's shadow called the "penumbra."

It's not worth staying up for, but the moon will be a bit darker.

There are increasing signs that a tropical storm or hurricane will develop in the northwest Caribbean in about 7 to 10 days' time.

Thereafter, it may meander into the Gulf of Mexico.

A broad gyre of spin over the region will probably pinch off a more concentrated lobe of spin.
