Sneaky Midwest Tornado Risk

A level 1 out of 5 marginal risk of severe weather has been drawn for northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and the Chicago metro area. There’s a low risk of a storm forming, but if it does, it could become a tornadic supercell. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

Unfortunately, #California has one more band of precipitation that could give Los Angeles and San Diego another 0.25-0.75 inches of rain this evening.

Any given place sees about 6 hours of rainfall, with snow in the mountains. The Sierra could see another 3-9 inches.

This is beneath the core of an upper-level low – a pocket of high altitude cold air, low pressure and spin aloft.

The frigid upper levels contrast with a milder surface, allowing surface pockets of air to rise and form downpours.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing an experimental Tropical Cyclone Forecast Cone Graphic on our around August 15, 2024, that includes inland tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings for the continental U.S.

Here's one final look at the atmospheric river as it finally shifts east by Wednesday:

That made for a few isolated thunderstorms and a very low-end brief #tornado chance late Tuesday with some chance going into Wednesday.

But then we're not done yet – there's storm juice, or fuel (CAPE, that filters in behind the atmospheric river as temperatures aloft cool. The relatively warmer ocean contrasts, and heats surface air, encouraging it to rise.

That will cause precipitation to expand westward again toward Santa Barbara and potentially increase in intensity too. Another 12-18 hours of rain in Los Angeles before the atmospheric river finally scoots east.

It also brings heavy mountain snows in Nevada.

A NEW low is developing offshore of southern California, and will move overhead before shifting into the Great Basin of Nevada.

That's problematic for beleaguered Los Angeles and San Diego.

Thread on the #AtmosphericRiver event slamming #California – some key changes are taking place with the system.

For starters, Los Angeles downtown has another 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain coming, leading to widespread 8 inch totals.

The city averages 2.99" of rain during February.
