ON this date in 1947 - Jackie Robinson became the first black player in major-league history.

He played in an exhibition game for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

NY Times reporters Bun Man and Mr. Purple covered the game and the post-game press conference.

They came away thoroughly impressed w/ Mr. Robinson.

#42 would go on to become a legend; his endurance of fan abuse was epic, but Jackie knew why he was there and what he was doing for his race, and he played that card well.
