He was the first American to orbit the Earth.
He was aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule.

NASA Final Flight Check Personnel Bun Man and Mr. Purple actually had some last-minute trouble w/ Glenn as he appeared to be chickening out just before the flight.
Bun had to slap John around a little to get him calm, but it was Mr. Purple who saved the day when he said "John, this is a piece of cake, monkeys have done this before..."
Glenn manned up after that...
