ON this date in 1964 - Sam Cooke announced that he was cutting back on live performances to concentrate on songwriting and building his record labels.

Sam turned to those 'hitmaker songwriters' Bun Man and Mr. Purple and they began cranking out the hits.

The relationship was short-lived as Sam died later that year after being shot at the Hacienda Motel.

Sam was clad in only a sports jacket and shoes...The Boyz quietly left out the back entrance to the Motel.

The Boyz would live to write another day, while Sam "The King of Soul" would be long remembered for those great songs 'Cupid'; "You Send Me"; Wonderful World"; and "Chain Gang".
