We need civics education in schools to build effective democratic citizens - The Washington Post
washingtonpost.com/opinions/we

High schools are asked to do a lot, this is one of the important ones...

Yes, graduates need jobs. Yes, schools should support that. But democracies also need citizens and effective and equitable civic participants. Schools should support that, too.

@Madken65 i didn't realize schools were no longer teaching civics. wow. Definitely needs to be done.

@Wolvie Many dropped or pushed into other courses as No Child Left Behind forced schools to make decisions between focusing on deficit skills or 'a compleat education'...

@Madken65 must have been part of Karl Rove's dumbing down of a America program. i had no idea

@Wolvie Actually, while I'm prone to blame the Repubs, I think both pol parties should take equal blame over this misguided decision...but educators let this happen, instead of cleaning up their own shop, they let non-educator legislators make decisions for them...

Damn, just as non-democratic citizens seem to be doing now

@Madken65 I'm not so sure of blaming the educators- i am sure they objected - but equally sure that since here in America we don't seem to value teachers as we should that their voice were not heard as plans for public education monies were talked about in the public forum- i remember the government pushing "no child" quite heavily.

Follow

@Wolvie As an educator during that time, the blame is warranted...

We couldn't get out of our own way

@Madken65 @Wolvie the GOP has been dumbing down and defunding schools for a reason... to win elections. Now they have Devos.
