🎧beabadoobee, “Beatopia”. I never know what to make of beabadoobee. She’s a shape shifter for sure so its always something a little different. The music is super listenable, there’s just…something I am not getting (?). I like the songs, but I want to REALLY love them. This new album has a very cool laid back psyche-folk vibe and Beatrice Laus’ voice is light and airy. She has a flair for melody too. When she kicks in the over drive on songs like “Talk”, I want more. #cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 “Jazz is Dead 13/Katalyst”. Hip-Hop/Jazz producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammed have been inviting legacy jazz players to collaborate on the “Jazz is Dead” series for several years. This time they’re working with 9-piece collective Katalyst - to dramatic effect. While the organic jazz bubbles away on the surface, the production steers clear of any of the familiar hip-hop trappings, keeping the sounds natural and giving the record a live in the studio retro feel. #cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 Steve Lacy, "Gemini Rights". Again out of my comfort zone. My boys told me to give this one a listen (after we had finished dissecting Lizzo's new one). This is a very solid modern R&B record - beautifully produced - with very few of the go-to production hacks. An honest, soulful, organic record. Good for a Friday night. #CoSomusic #MPNP
🎧 Lizzo, "Special". Lizzo is so far out of my musical comfort zone - but when I first heard "Coconut Oil" it was like a new door had opened for me, and I've been a fan ever since. I love everything about her. Her new album finally dropped today and it is FIRST on the Friday playlist. It's a brighter happier record than the debut. #CoSomusic #MPNP
🎧 The Like, "Release Me". Mark Ronson-produced 60's girl-group revival, fronted by the daughter of the A&R guy at the label that released it. If you can get past the nepotism, this is a very good record. Ronson nailed the AM radio sound, the bass rumbles/the organ cuts, and vocalist Z Berg had the knack for merging L.A. pop lyrics with Brill Building melodies. Tennessee Thomas (daughter of Attraction Pete Thomas) got the beats just right. Released 2010. #CoSomusic #MPNP
🎧 Manic Street Preachers, "The Holy Bible". One of the most brutal, harrowing albums ever made. Lyricist Richie Edwards poured all of his addictions, afflictions and mental health issues into every word, creating what would eventually be his suicide note (he disappeared the following year). MSP are full-on fury on this record, matching RE's internal chaos with a bitter abandon. Essential LP. #CoSomusic #MPNP
🎧 Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS?, "Maine Coon". Interminable band name aside, this Finnish band's new release is just, well, fucking delightful. Sunny pop-punk (emphasis on POP) with great melodies, dashes of roller-rink organ, buzzy guitars and bass - it's like opening a well shaken bottle of soda - the effervesce bubbles over for the full 30 minutes of this far too short LP. Danceable garage pop. A much needed elixir. #CoSomusic #MPNP
🎧 Body Type, "Everything is Dangerous....". Hailing from the boiling-over Sydney music scene - Body Type is pulling from multiple post-punk and post-grunge styles here, creating a blistering set of songs that keep changing the pace. Sophie McComish has one of those sneering riot-grrl voices - she doesn't let you leave the room until SHE is done with you. Her vocal on "The Charm" - the band's response to the music biz' gender standards, drips with punk venom. Loving this record.#CoSomusic
🎧 GHUM, "Bitter". Just dropped on the Everything Sucks label - GHUM is a London based quartet. I guess it's "post-punk" - so the attitude is there but there's an intricacy to the music as well - and the dynamics shift enough to avoid it all going down like a pop-punk mouthwash. Laura Guerrero Lora stretches out her slight rasp with flights of true pissed-off-ness ("You messed up/With my fear, my desire/Damn you") and sings in English and Spanish. Love the guitars here, too. #Cosomusic
🎧 Just Mustard, "Heart Under". Not the best band name but this Dundalk, Ireland quintet delivers some noisy atmospheric throb, fire-on-steel guitars, with ethereal vocals and a steady pulse from the bottom. #Cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 Piano Circus, "Skin and Wire". Bill Bruford is my all time favorite musician. I probably should have been aware of this LP before yesterday! It's one of his last recordings (he retired in 2009). Piano Circus is a 6-piano ensemble and thru their work with composer Colin Riley, they came to work with Bill's label and together released this almost-avant jazz record. Filled with jumpy arpeggios, cool vibes, and Bill's signature sound, its a great addition to his vast catalog. #Cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 Phoenix On The Fault Line, “Basement of the Coliseum”. It’s easy just to say POTFL is a proto-prog-metal band augmented by a horn section, but they are so much more than that. Wrapped inside a time travel/zombie hunter mythology that permeates their songs, POTFL is a quaking mountain of a band. They are big, loud, and mathematically precise. There really is no other band like them. Every song brings the thunder and cracks the very earth. #cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 Metric, “Formentera”. Opening with an epic 11 minute track may be a little out of the box for Metric but damn they make it work. From there it only gets better. Emily Haines is in full chanteuse mode on a set of songs that are as gorgeous as they are foreboding. “I’m a true doomscroller/cant seem to shut it down/until the worst is over/and its never over”. That’s us, folks. And Metric still matters. #cosomusic #MPNP
🎧 Into It Over It, "Twelve Towns". I gotta admit this band passed under my radar for 10+ years until last night when I saw them play live. Sometimes you just have to "be there" I guess. I'm sold on IIOI now and I started with this catalog obscurity. Apologies to Evan Weiss, who is a great songwriter and a ridiculously personable performer. Great band too. #Cosomusic #MPNP
We’re “pre-gaming” for tonight’s Pool Kids/Into It Over It show. Poke Bowls! And yes…those are light saber chopsticks. #cosofood
