π§ Roger Waters, "Amused To Death" Thanks to @YouInMyEye for putting this one in my mental queue. It's hard to separate Waters' extremism from his art. He looks at war as an assault on people, so his politics are guided by body count. That being said, ATD, to my ears, is his ultimate anti-war/anti-capitalism statement. One has to respect his dedication to the want for a better world. Lyrically, musically, and production-wise, it's a triumph.
@MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
I have an issue with Mr Waters as well but there have been a couple cases where I had to separate the art from the artist and I do want to listen to this
@Idissent @YouInMyEye
No argument there. As I age (quickly) the list of artists from which I must disassociate myself personally in order to still enjoy their art gets longer. John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Lou Reed, Waters, Mike Portnoy, and on. It's a slippery slope sometimes. As recently as 2021, there was a band I LOVED and I had to stop even mentioning them in conversation because it turned out their main person was a horrible (read young and stupid) user of people. Yeah, it sucks.
@Idissent @YouInMyEye
And I'll admit a lot of it is trying to set an example for my kids. My boys are enormous Kanye fans, and we are Jewish. And we had that conversation, about art vs artist. Where's the line? At what point is your personal ideology offended to the point where you have to say "fuck that guy, I'll listen to this other thing instead". I guess we are lucky to live in a time where art is abundant AND available at the click of a mouse.
@MPCavalier @Idissent @YouInMyEye I don't like to listen to the music or absorb the art of people who I know are assholes.
First, it becomes tainted to me, and I enjoy it less.
But I also know that music and art carry messages and influences with them, that move us and change us.
I don't want to put any more contaminated bullshit into my head than I have to. I already have to live with ads and news and vitriol from "leaders".
I don't want Bad Guys' music in my head.
@AskTheDevil @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
We each do what is right for us
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye Eh, some people clearly do what isn't right for them, but it's their free will.
Yes. Covid brought out a bunch of anti-vaxxers such as Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, etc. I don't admit much as I'm more of a Hendrix and Jeff Beck kinda guy but I'm heavily influenced by Eric Clapton as well. I don't post as many Clapton songs as I want to anymore.
@YouInMyEye @Idissent
I guess Iucked out there - I was never a fan of Clapton or Van Morrison!
π
@MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
Me either lol
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye Same.
@MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
The lead singer and songwriter of my favorite band turned out to be a creepy groomer but I had to separate the art from the artist because the songs mean so much to me. It's not always easy but in this case I was not going to stop listening
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye Who was that? I just want to know so that I can stop listening to them.
@otter405 @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
The name of the band is Brand New. They disbanded after word got out...
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye Oh ok. I didn't listen to a ton of their stuff anyway so....whew. :)
@otter405 @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
I've been hooked for 20 years at least. Nothing I can do about it now lol their songs are a permanent part of my life
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye Completely understandable Sarah.
@otter405 @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
Thanks Steve. If I'm honest it was never about a specific member anyway so I didn't give it a lot of thought. I don't know, maybe that's really shitty
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye What have you been listening to lately?
@otter405 @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
I have several play lists on Spotify and it's all over the place. 10 CC, Nazareth, Blind Faith, Steve Winwood, Elvis Costello, Black Sabbath (with Ronnie James) just all over the place
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye My playlists are all over the place too but, mostly, it is punk rock. Old and new.
Right this second I'm listening to the brand new Jesus and Mary Chain album.
@otter405 @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye
I didn't even know they were still together. I've been seriously out of the loop for a while. It's weird because music is my life but I haven't sat down and listened to anything new for some time now
@Idissent @MPCavalier @YouInMyEye You should. π
@otter405
What do you listen to?
@otter405 @Idissent @YouInMyEye There are a couple of bands I've been really digging lately. Gustaf is one. Also the new Bevis Frond album. The new Equal Creatures is amazing. Rosie Tucker's new album dropped today and I am really digging it.
@MPCavalier @Idissent @YouInMyEye I'll check those out. I've quite the list of new stuff to go through today. #newreleasefriday
@MPCavalier @Idissent @YouInMyEye Here's a new release breakdown for today (stuff that I've enjoyed):
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Glasgow Eyes
Restorations - S/T
Totally Slow - The Darkness Intercepts
Snuff - Off on the Charabanc
Just a quick note - there are differences between the 1992 original and the 2015 re-release. It doesn't really take away anything conceptually, but I prefer the original. The mix is almost identical, except for "The Bravery of Being Out of Range" which is markedly different. The 2015 mix also inserts a long disputed sample from 2001 A Space Odyssey in the song "Perfect Sense", replacing the original backwards masked "message" to Stanley Kubrick. Choose your own adventure.
