You guys, I have SO MANY THOUGHTS on this film. Probably going to do a YouTube on the craft dimensions, but hot dog.

Hot! Dog!

@MLClark Could a scifi horror movie be winning in this awards season?

@stueytheround

πŸ˜… I'll just say that it's been a good year for cinematography in scifi in general!

Have you seen anything recently that you loved?

@MLClark Last movie I watched in tne cinema was Top Gun Maverick! Which I really enjoyed.

@stueytheround

What a rush that must have been! Some films are just *meant* to be watched on the big screen.

@MLClark It was Val Kilmer's performance which got me. Understated and absolutely beautiful.

@stueytheround

Oh for sure! You can always tell when an actor is really giving everything to a role. Thanks for sharing, Stuey. I hope your next trip to the cinema is a winner, too!

@MLClark I've been reluctant because the Alien franchise has been done to death. What is new and fresh about "Romulus" that makes it worthwhile?

@WordsmithFL

Not getting into a full run-down fresh out of theatre, but the short answer is that it works because it's *not* trying to add new gimmicks, or follow in the footsteps of Nu Alien. It is a return to the classic themes, narrative structures, and cinematography that made Alien and Aliens work so well.

But if I say anything more right now I'm going to be diverting my high from the film, so - more later.

@MLClark Okay, thank you ... I have a weekend to myself in mid-September, so perhaps I'll go see it then.

@WordsmithFL

πŸ˜… Oh, you'll have my full thoughts before then!

But I hear you - I wasn't going to see it in theatre myself, until an SF friend I trust saw it and recommended it. I too was burned out on all the franchise's misfires.

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I was *so* cheesed off with Prometheus that I rewrote the screenplay in a 3-day fury, using the same story elements but with better execution. πŸ™ƒ Scott is good on visuals, but ALWAYS needs a good writer to complement his work.

@WordsmithFL

*For clarity, Romulus is not directed by Scott: it was done by Federico Álvarez, and his love for the first four Alien films comes through clearly in his execution here. My Scott reference was for Prometheus.

@MLClark I want to know how the Romulans smuggled the xenomorph across the Neutral Zone.

@WordsmithFL

Considering that SNW took a xenomorph direction with the Gorn, we're definitely setting ourselves up for an S3 opener that takes a different direction with Xenomorph XX121's evolution.

My wager is not a *full* transition to a species that can see others with respect, but definitely one with enough internal discourse about the future it wants for itself that it opts for a treaty with the Federation that lets its next generation work things out for itself. Ah, the Star Trek way. :)

@MLClark 🐊

La'an: "Nice shoes, captain. Alligator?"

Pike: "Gorn, actually."

@MLClark "... was *so* cheesed off with Prometheus that I rewrote the screenplay ..."

And that's why I wrote my "Tomorrowland" fanfic.

@MLClark I'm not invested in the franchise, but I'm excited that you're excited! Does that make any sense?

@Ironworker229

It does! I often find people's passions highly infectious - not enough that I love the thing that they love, but enough that I love that something brings them joy*!

*I mean, with a few obvious exceptions for people whose passion is doing harm to others. No love for that "love".

What's moved you to delight most recently, in the way of nature, art, community projects, or the world?

@MLClark I believe seeing other people's joyful emotions triggers those memories, ever so briefly, and just enough to release the chemicals to stimulate our own joyful emotions. In the same sense it would be the same for all emotions. The more empathetic you are the stronger the emotions. @Ironworker229

@Ironworker229 I see all life as being symbiotic. Cause and effect, that sort of thing. People who are highly tuned tend to cope better and find relational value in shared emotions. My theory anyways. By no means is it correct. @MLClark

@MLClark Eh, not much to report other than enjoying the community here (not to minimize). Things are just kind of clicking along on an even keel, which, to be honest, is just fine by me. We started watching "Unstable" on Nflix with Rob Lowe last night and it's entertaining, but pretty light. Good filler, so far. I'm at a point in my life where I kind of feel like I'm in limbo. Mid '50's, pretty established in my work. Eligible for union retirement, but it's not quite enough to live on.

@MLClark So I suppose that I'll keep on keeping on for another 6 years, or so until I'm eligible for social security, though the payments go up if I hold on til I'm 65. Wife is planning a vacation for next year to Sicily and some Other Parts of the Mediterranean, TBD! So that's something!

Not at all! I just conked out too soon last night to send along a proper reply. (You're catching me up 30 min before my alarm even goes off, though, so bodies are odd.)

Thank you so much for the sincere and thought-out response.

What I saw in it was everyday contentment, and I genuinely think it's a gift to be able to recognize and lean into the "small" pleasures of a nice, stable life.

I'm very happy to know you're doing well in such a well-rounded way, @Ironworker229. Long may it continue.
