Don't do that.
If you're not sure what to say, you don't need to try to give a pep talk.
It's okay to just sit with someone and be pleasant together instead.
We can talk about sportsball! Or Rocky movies! Or tardigrades!

@MLClark I once had an old friend go on & on about how 💩 my life is. I told her my life was fine & no need to review my bad choices in men, etc., but she kept going on & on. She thought she was being supportive. I joined the raft of her former friends who didn't want to be picked apart.
Oof. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
I know it's important to learn who we can and can't rely on, but the actual "learning" part is always tough.
