🎉 Woo! The geekiness begins!

Today for , I introduce a review series for and general lovers of moral philosophy. is a terrific site for discourse, so I'm going to be reviewing all upcoming episodes on a "happy human" scale, for how well each holds ideas in tension & develops complexity around the problems it presents.

(Not yo' usual reviews, I know! But hopefully a lot more thought-provoking & fun.)

Hope you'll engage! 😅 🌌 onlysky.media/mclark/star-trek

@lilyunsub Oh, fantastic! I'm so glad it's resonating with others, too. You can really tell how many of us have been hungry for a solid Trek for quite some time!

@MLClark Great review btw! Definitely have missed the humanist part of trek. Discovery only really ventured into it in the latest season and not quite as successfully as SNW because of how jarring it felt from the previous seasons. Especially the first. ❤️

@lilyunsub Oh thanks for reading! You hit the nail on the head with respect to the last season of Discovery: even though it's better than the ones that came before, it's still haunted by all those difficult earlier seasons. Looking forward to your thoughts on other episodes! :)

@MLClark SNW is a really refreshing return to form ... less of the grimdark depressive narratives over and over. I am really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to reading your review series.

@thewebrecluse Oooo! I'm so glad we'll be watching this together. Looking forward to all your thoughts! :) I adore Ortegas. Do you have any partialities yet?

@MLClark I don't like to give my opinions on media anymore. I had a popular web show and blog for 6+ years where I shared my thoughts and it was pretty much a horror show of hate mail, death threats, and all kinds of shit from insane people who feel very strongly about their characters. It left me with quite a bad taste regarding most American media so now when I do watch it, it's just as background. I like the show enough to watch it by choice, but I can't say I think that deeply about it.

@thewebrecluse Oh, for sure. I'm glad you left that toxicity behind! I remember similar fanaticism from some anime I followed as a teen. Star Trek definitely gets me grouchy when done poorly, but in the "I'll make my OWN Picard, and call it Jean-Luc, and make it soooo much better than this other series!" sort of way. No death threats to strangers! 🙃 Or friends! Glad you'll be watching, too. :)

@MLClark Yeah I'm heavily an anti-fandom person. I believe that fandom in general is a fanatic state that has ruined a lot of things for a lot of people and is an incredibly unhealthy state of being. I have many friends in the American television industry doing different things and my appreciation of their work, in front of and behind the camera, is the only reason I watch any of it. I have a friend who is a gaffer and sometimes I watch terrible shows just to see his name come up and clap 😂

@thewebrecluse That is the freaking sweetest thing ever. "Yeah, sure, I'll watch pap just to cheer your name in the credits! Why not?" What a good friend. :)

@MLClark Well I'm someone who, when I have a really powerful experience with media, like ... some epic video game or movie that took me away somewhere ... I will sit and read every single name of every person in the credits so I can thank them in my own way for making that experience possible especially if it's something that I feel changed me in a way that is significant. It doesn't happen often but when it does ... I'm thankful because I'll be a better person from whatever I've learned.

@MLClark I'll just look forward to reading your thoughts 😆

@MLClark

I absolutely love this perspective and the first entry is a rich trove.

To me, difficult moral or ethical choices make the most interesting and important stories.

Who can shoot fastest and straightest is supremely boring to me, but the dilemma under pressure of "should I shoot" really engages me.

I will be a regular reader of this series, even though I don't even have a TV or streaming service :)

@ceorl Oh, Ceorl! Thanks so much for reading, and for your thoughts. I wholeheartedly agree, and I look forward to your insights on the issues raised by these episodes, even if you can't watch them yourself right away.

@MLClark

Well thanks to your synopses, I don't really need to see the acting or special effects to grasp and consider the dilemmas. :)

@MLClark Dang, still have to get around to watching the new Trek series. I've been waiting to view it with some of the family members but our schedules are a mess.

@jasonbu That's the other terrific thing about good Trek -- it really is a fantastic franchise to watch as a whole family, across generations. Hope you get the opportunity soon!
