What moral compass? They're playing to the right-wing religious fanatics for the same reason TV Evangelists do: they are chumps waiting to be fleeced.
That is, unless they are fanatics too.
The problem is that now they are entirely beholden to the fanatics to survive a Republican primary.
This is where the cowardice comes in.
