One can't escape politics. It's sad, but it's a fact of life. Wishing to escape from politics is akin to wishing to go off and live away from all of the world's unpleasantness. You might escape for a while, but eventually the world will find you. And your abstention will contribute the the shape of that world.

It's like bishop Desmond Tutu said:
"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor."
I would add that the degree to which you can remain aloof from politics is a pretty good indicator of how deeply implicated you are in the regime, no matter how much you like to pretend you have nothing to do with it. As E.E. Cummings wrote, "you would rather black the boots of success than inquire whose soul dangles from his watch-chain."
