My mom was a single mom with cancer in the USA in the 90's. It was awful. We lived in abject poverty and sometimes didn't have running water or lights. Food was always scarce. I bought no new clothes for over eight years because we couldn't afford it.

My friend in Australia has cancer and the treatment plan includes paycheck protection, free medical care, in-home help... if we'd had that in the USA 30 years ago I wouldn't have grown up in poverty. My life would have been drastically different.
