Many men my age (and very likely women too) were raised to think that bullying was strength; that using mockery, intimidation, or force to control other people constituted leadership and that, indeed, the whole point of leadership was subjugating other people to your will so that they could serve your needs.

Many (I hope) grew out of this viewpoint; but many others evidently still use it as the backbone of their entire philosophy.
