The thing is that Bezos doesn't GAF about either the paper as an institution or about the views of his subscribers. He's only concerned about an audience of one. It's a measure of the times that he would put that one person above millions of subscribers (and can probably afford to); another measure is that nobody else is pointing out that this is scandalous abasement unworthy of a democracy.
