And we're off! Get well fast, Representative Thompson!

JUST IN: the
@January6thCmte
will hold MORE public hearings in September.

HCR

Focus on the 187 minutes. Trump ignored pleas to stop the attack on the Capitol. He was "the only person in the world" who could have stopped the rioters.

HCR

Representatives Adam Kinzinger and Elaine Luria running things tonight. More hearings in September.

HCR

No doubt that there was a concerted effort to overturn the election, run by Trump. Made targets out of Pence and members of Congress. There must be accountability to the law and the American people, at all levels of government.

HCR

Must have consequences or terrible risk to our democracy.

HCR

Liz Cheney (R-WY) is up. Says nice things about Thompson.

😊

HCR

Trump had 7 point plan to overturn the election. Now there is more information than ever, and "the dam has begun to break." There is "considerably more to do." Committee will have more hearings in September.

HCR

Way more info now than when Trump was impeached and tried. 57 of 100 senators voted to convict him. Clip of McConnell blaming Trump (AFTER he had voted to acquit him. I'm not a fan.)

HCR

We know the many ways in which Trump tried to steal the election. Nothing worked. On afternoon of January 6, he relied on the "angry armed mob Trump sent to the Capitol."

HCR

Even those who had helped cause the crisis were scared. Hmmm....

HCR

Trump refused to call off the rioters. In immediate aftermath, no one defended Trump. No one should now, either.

HCR

Luria is up. She shows the presidential oath of office. President is supposed to execute the laws faithfully. (Really nice framing of why all this matters.)

HCR

Trump instructed supporters, whom he knew were armed, to march to the Capitol. He promised to go with them.

HCR

Pence was already in the Capitol and the building had been breached. But rather than stopping the violence, Trump refused to tell the mob to leave.

HCR

Why the hell is he in the Rose Garden when he made that video? That's really important. Why did the Secret Service permit that? I mean, unless they knew something?

HCR

So what happened between the end of the Ellipse speech and the video telling people to go home. He sat in the dining room. Dereliction of duty. Luria is a 20 year Navy vet.

HCR

Kinzinger now. (Also a veteran.) Clip of McCarthy blaming Trump for inaction. Also Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark A. Milley says he should have done something.

HCR

What explains Trump's behavior? The mob attacking the Capitol gave Trump what he wanted: the delaying of the electoral count. Trump didn't FAIL to act. He CHOSE not to act.

HCR

Other people DID their duty. Trump did not.

HCR

Witnesses: Matthew Pottinger and Sarah Matthews. Pottinger is also a veteran. Matthews is former deputy press secretary. Both resigned after the events of January 6.

HCR

Pottinger explains his role as deputy national security advisor to Trump. He's a true believer. Talking about how good Trump's national security policies were.

HCR

Matthews emphasizes, too, that she's a Republican. (Good article in... I think it was the Washington Post... from two political scientists about how hearing from REPUBLICANS-- but not Democrats-- changes Republican minds.)

HCR

Luria: security official has told the committee that the White House knew there were weapons in the crowd. Official says they "were all in shock" at idea Trump was marching to the Capitol. It would turn a rally into a coup.

HCR

Alarmed because the president wanted to lead 10,000 supporters to the Capitol.

HCR

Luria says that Tony Ornato said the president was "irate" when not allowed to go to the Capitol. (They're supporting Cassidy Hutchinson here.) Another police officer supports that account.

HCR

SGT. Mark Robinson says in more than 100 details, he knew of no other in which the president fought his detail.

HCR

Robinson says Trump wanted to go to the Capitol. Back at White House, put on standby to see if Trump could go to the Capitol. 45 minutes to an hour to see if Trump was going to go to the Capitol.

HCR

Secret Service officers have retained private counsel. ‼️

HCR

White House employee told Trump about the Capitol riot within 15 minutes of getting back to the White House.

HCR

Trump went to dining room, steps from the Oval Office, and watched the Fox News Channel for more than 2.5 hours.

HCR

No official record of what Trump did. Call logs are blank. Presidential daily diary is also blank. No photos. Chief White House photographer wanted to take pictures, but was told no.

HCR

But the committee knows what he was doing....

HCR

What he WASN'T doing was calling any official to stop the attack.

HCR

Trump was calling senators to get them to object to the counting of the electoral votes.

Follow

HCR

We know from Giuliani's phone records that Trump called him.

HCR

At 1:49 DC police declared a riot at the Capitol. Trump tweeted out a link to his Ellipse speech.

HCR

Kinzinger: Trump's staff begged him to condemn the violence and tell the crowd to go home. Cipollone says he was emphatic and clear that people needed to know they had to leave the Capitol.

HCR

Cipollone says lots of people were saying that. And yet, it took more than two hours for Trump to tell them to leave.

HCR

Cipollone and Cassidy Hutchinson both said that Ivanka Trump was trying to work on Trump to tell them to leave.

HCR

Hutchinson says that Meadows said that Trump didn't want to do anything about the "Hang Mike Pence" chants; Trump thought Pence deserved it.

HCR

Cipollone says the chants were outrageous... and expressed that.

HCR

At any moment, Trump could have appeared at the podium in the press room (which is quite close to the Oval Office) and address the nation.

HCR

Matthews says Trump could have gotten on camera in less than 60 seconds.

HCR

Briefing room has a camera on at all times.

HCR

Advisors worried about Trump's unscripted comments, though.

HCR

Matthews and Ben Williamson (?) agreed Trump needed to get out there fast to call things off. Press guy Judd Deere, too, went to talk to press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

HCR

At 2:03, Trump called Giuliani. At 2:13, Proud Boys broke into the Capitol.

HCR

This footage remains horrifying. Maybe worse than ever, actually.

HCR

Secret Service tried to get a safe path out for Pence. It was a very close thing. Trump's national security team was listening to the discussion about Pence's security.

HCR

What was meant by the comment that the agents did not "sound good right now"? It means they were worried for their own lives. Called to say goodbye to their family members.

HCR

Running out of options. Getting nervous. Screaming.

HCR

Rioters anger focused on Pence. Storm Capitol in fury at Pence. "Mike Pence, traitor!" "Mike Pence has screwed us."

HCR

Trump did not try to calm his supporters. Instead, he sent the 2:24 tweet saying "Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done...." Put a target on his own vice president's back.

@Jezibaba Aside from reliving it, there’s so much more corroborated evidence being provided…. Will this result in any meaningful accountability?
