Today's big transformation.*
* I do not support shaving double coated dogs. This was a comfort groom. This girl was completely matted/pelted, to the point her skin was bruised. There was no saving the coat.
@LnzyHou a little better. Today was a make up day for last week. I'm in bed now.
Rest up girlie
@JeSsA As a Pyr owner, I have to say 'omg!!!' However, you're someone I'd absolutely trust with mine, so I get why you posted what you did. Poor, beautiful girl 💜
@JeSsA Awww! I'm glad you were able to help her!
Out of curiousity, would you mind educating us a bit on not shaving double-coated dogs?
@AskTheDevil Sure! That double coat does a job. Contrary to what one might think, in the summer months, those double coats protect the dog from the heat. In the winter, they do the opposite, working to help insulate and keep warm. Double coats have 2 different coat types, each with a purpose. Shaving increases heat related risks, sunburn, as well as ruining coat texture, not growing back correctly, or at all, & risk if developing alopecia
@JeSsA Thank you!
As I understand it, it's sort of like how desert people sometimes wear body-covering clothing, even dark clothing - it keeps the sun and heat on the clothes instead of _you_.
@AskTheDevil Yes! Very similar
@JeSsA An acquaintance of mine lives in Arizona, and has a Great Pyrenees. Other than not having a dog with a coat like that in Arizona, what do you recommend as best practice for keeping the dog safe and healthy, so that I can nag them?
@JeSsA Oh she will be so much happier and with care her new coat will hopefully grow back beautifully.
I presume you gave her people lots of good advice, too.
@stueytheround I did. A very sweet man, who adores his girl. He's older and the coat got away from him
@JeSsA Hope you're feeling better.
Do you know how many pounds of hair you shaved off?
@GeezerWench I didn't weigh it, but it was definitely a hefty amount. She was in rough shape
@JeSsA We have brushed wolf fur when they start to shed undercoat and filled up 13 gallon trash bags. We used to trade it to a Dine lady at PowWows.
@Wolfman I believe it!! That undercoat is like down! I've saved trashbags full of hair for clients and random folks who have come in and asked. At gome, I've put it in suet feeders and the birds pull it out for their nests
@JeSsA The Dine Woman we traded with spun it into wool thread and made sweaters out of it.
@Wolfman I love that
@JeSsA I was a bit surprised at her for doing that. The Navajo believe that wolves are skinwalkers. But over the years of visiting different Tribal Nations I see the differences in Traditional Culture and a more progressive culture.
@Wolfman ohh wow! That is so interesting! I've heard of skinwalkers, of course, see the term used, unsensitively, for too often, but was unaware that wolves were believed to be them, by the Navajo.
@JeSsA @QueenOfEverything
Sigh... Lazy idiot owners...
@InvaderGzim @QueenOfEverything normally, I agree. In her case, it's elderly owners who adopted her, and got in over their heads with the coat. Normally, I get dogs in this condition owned by younger, able bodied folks, and it infuriates me. Blatant neglect, and they kinda laugh it off. This was not at all that, and he was honest about it. Still hard to see, but more understandable.
That’s completely understandable. Hopefully they can keep up with the daily grooming now and bring the beauty back to you for a professional grooming regularly. 🌻
@QueenOfEverything @InvaderGzim I hope so! I think he will. A dear man who loves his girl so.
Lemme tell ya. The nails bout killed me
🤮
You did the greatest, kindest thing ever by shaving this poor pupper! And you did it with STYLE! Love the pom pom!
She will be comfortable in her new fur cut. And I hope her owners get the message and don't let her get that way again.
I had a sweet cat that had the weirdest fur- it would mat as soon as she laid down. She was a bit chubby and just couldn't groom herself. I took her to the vet every couple of months for a Lion cut (with poodle poms for feet & tail).
GLORY ❤️ it!
@QueenOfEverything Oooh too cute! Look at her little boots!
Here’s the funny part… Glory was a shy cat and loved the rest of her clowder (I had 6 cats then) but she just didn’t like being groomed. The vet thought she had very sensitive shin with freakish fur that constantly matted- and suggested trying the Lion cut (with poodle poms). When I brought her home- instead of hiding- she literally sashayed around the room, rubbing up against each cat- absolutely femme fatale. This fun personality came forward once the fur came off!
@QueenOfEverything awwww I love it!! Her coat looks like it is super downy, and you add any humidity or friction to that coat type, and yup. Instant matting! Comfort groom at its best ❤️❤️
@JeSsA She looks so much more comfortable. Good going.
🤗 💛
@Lindy Thank you! She really was.
@JeSsA
Surprised you worked. How are you feeling?
